National Consultation
National Consultation with the Department of Disaster Management on Inclusive Disaster Risk Management for Persons with Disabilities
On December 23, 2024, a national consultation was held at Hotel Abakash, Mohakhali, Dhaka, organized by the Disabled Child Foundation (DCF) with support from Caritas Bangladesh and CBM Global Disability Inclusion under the project “‘Strengthening People-centered Inclusive Disaster Risk Management in Khulna of Bangladesh (DIDRM) project”. The Director General of DDM Mr. Razwanur Rahman was the chief guest at the consultation. Ms. Nasrin Jahan, Founder & Executive Director of DCF presided over the Consultation. Officials designated Directors, and Deputy Directors from DDM participated in consultation as discussants. Besides, participants from INGOs, NGOs, OPDs, and persons with disabilities participated in the consultation.
Key Highlights: We approached DDM to make inclusive DRM from planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation; as per our demand the discussants committed as follows:
• Commitment to Inclusion: DG of DDM, Mr. Razwanur Rahman, emphasized collaboration with the Cyclone Preparedness Program (CPP) to ensure early warning systems are inclusive for persons with disabilities.
• Accessibility Focus: Cyclone shelters will be made accessible based on Accessibility Audit findings, and inclusive simulation exercises for CPP will be implemented.
• Leadership Empowerment: Persons with disabilities are emphasized as key stakeholders in building inclusive and sustainable disaster risk management frameworks.
Call to Action:
This consultation reinforced the urgent need for policy reforms, resource allocation, and cross-ministerial collaboration to integrate disability inclusion into disaster risk management.
