Inclusive and Climate-Resilient DRR, Livelihood and SaftyNet for Persons with Disabilities
On December 29, 2024, the Disabled Child Foundation (DCF), in collaboration with the Daily Samakal and with the support of Caritas Bangladesh and CBM Global Disability Inclusion, organized a transformative roundtable consultation on “Inclusive and Climate-Resilient Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Livelihoods, and Social Safety Net for Persons with Disabilities.”
Held at the Daily Samakal premises in Tejgaon, Dhaka, the event brought together stakeholders from diverse sectors to discuss strategies for creating an inclusive and resilient future. The consultation was honored by the presence of Mr. Razwanur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), as the Chief Guest, alongside distinguished speakers including Ms. Tania Khan, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (MoWCA); Dr. Md. Habib Ullah Bahar, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR); and Mr. Farid Ahmad Mollah, Additional Director of the Department of Social Services (DSS).
Representatives from UN agencies, NGOs, organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs), and other networks actively participated, highlighting innovative approaches to enhance livelihoods and social safety nets for persons with disabilities. Two study reports, i. market system and value chain analysis to identify climate-resilient disability-inclusive livelihood for persons with disabilities, and ii. Mapping of key livelihood stakeholders and existing livelihood options that are impacted by climate change and other disaster risks was shared in the consultation, and, an action plan for climate-resilient disability-inclusive livelihood based on studies was also shared. A position paper on the same issues was also shared in the consultation. DIDRM project interventions discussed, such as accessibility audit, inclusive climate governance, early warning system, strengthening SHGs, persons with disabilities, DMCs, and that all. All of the discussants emphasized disability inclusion in DRR policies, programs, and livelihood for persons with disabilities.
Ms. Nasrin Jahan, Executive Director of DCF, and Mr. Hafeezur Rahman, Chairperson of DCF, emphasized the crucial need to place inclusivity at the heart of disaster and climate resilience strategies, livelihood options, and SaftyNet.
This inspiring dialogue reinforced the importance of amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities in creating sustainable solutions and highlighted the power of collaboration in building a more equitable future for all. ✨
